Kitami Kindergarten is the oldest kindergarten in Kitami City, and was originally founded in 1939 by the Kitami branch of Japan Church of Christ, with the aim of continuing the early Christian missionary endeavors of Mr. and Mrs. Pierson*, with the goal of “Leading children to Christ”. The kindergarten received official status as a formal kindergarten in 1951.

*Mr. and Mrs. Pierson came from Elizabeth City, New Jersey, U.S. in 1881. They continued being devoted to preaching Christianity in the Kitami area until 1928.
